Clutch played a hell of a show at Hammerjacks in Batlimore last night. Not only was it her homecoming show on her current tour with Helmet, Quicksand and JD Pinkus, but it was the day after her latest studio album Sunrise at Slaughter Beach was released to the masses.
Critically acclaimed and keen to celebrate their longevity as a unit, Clutch livestreamed the show to their YouTube page, offering free access to an honest live show to anyone with an internet connection. For you, and I’m sure many others, this meant I could enjoy a killer rock show from the comfort of my home without having to wear pants! Isn’t technology something beautiful?
Not only was it a free show, but they played almost the entire show Sunrise at Slaughter Beachalthough the new songs were peppered with old classics like “A Shogun Named Marcus” and “Escape from the Prison Planet” throughout the set.
Of particular note was their performance of “Skeletons on Mars,” which featured Neil Fallon temporarily swinging his guitar over his waste to play one fucking theremin solo. Which shows Clutch sticking to the line of “Earth Rocker” — “If you’re going to do it, do it live on stage or don’t do it at all.”
For the encore, Neil Fallon introduced Mike Dillon of The Mike Dillon Band to play additional percussion. And while that’s nothing new, Fallon told the crowd that Dillon had just wrapped up a show in West Virginia a few hours earlier and headed to Maryland to make it in time for the encore, calling him a “lifer.”
But you absolutely don’t have to take my word for it. You can watch the entire concert below, which lasts approximately 90 minutes. So hang out and jam to some killer clutch tunes. Pants optional.
