Wisconsin has 130 districts with slow internet — here are the 10 slowest

High-speed Internet access in schools has come a long way in the past decade. In 2013, 70% of American schools lacked an internet connection at 100 kilobits per second per student, the minimum speed set by the Federal Communications Commission for basic classroom needs. By 2018, less than 2% of schools failed to meet this limit.

As more schools integrate technology into the classroom, the need for fast and reliable internet is growing. In 2020, the FCC raised the minimum bandwidth to 1 Mbps per student — 10 times faster than the previous minimum. Nearly 6 in 10 school districts met or exceeded this benchmark in 2021 — a 25% year-over-year increase, according to an analysis from Connect K-12.
