What Do You Think Was Ruined by the Internet? People Responded. » TwistedSifter

Oh boy, I bet this list could be 100 items long if we had the time…

I’m talking about what ordinary people think was ruined by the invention of the Internet, and these folks on AskReddit were kind enough to let us know what they thought about it.

lets take alook!

“Privacy.

This is the scary part.

Not only are algorithms identifying children, but social spaces like Twitter have teens recounting their ages, political beliefs and positions on every topic, and sometimes painful triggers.”

Secret stuff.

Before the internet, you had to really learn about certain things in the world. A beautiful campsite that only a few people know about, some hidden rules in Disneyland, etc.

When people post about it, things change and nothing is special anymore.”

“Listen the parties. I was a teenager in the late seventies.

My buddies and I used to meet on Sunday afternoons and bring each one three albums. Then we listen to music until dark and listen to things that weren’t in our sets. During these listening parties, I heard for the first time a lot of things that people call classics today.

I was a huge fan of Yes and ELP. David has been in Rush, Pink Floyd, and Jethro Tull. Joey has been in Black Sabbath, Van Halen, and The Doors. Joey’s older brother had Camal and Can and a few things I can’t remember other than they were great.

I don’t think we have a name for this. We all have to listen to each other’s favorite music and hang out. It was so much fun, and I miss it. I can’t imagine something like this surviving the internet age, but something amazing has been lost.

This afternoon I dived into old vinyl and listened to some Alan Parsons and Jimi Hendrix. Just something on a rainy Sunday afternoon.”

Conspiracy theories.

It used to be an interesting thing to hear or wonder about. You may randomly or rarely meet an actual conspiracy theorist or see one in a movie.

Now everyone has an aunt or uncle or friend who just got out of trouble and it’s sad.”

Journals.

I like getting magazines in the mail.

Can’t wait for Monday when Time and Newsweek come out.”

“Pawn shops/thrift stores.”

You used to be able to get some great finds with some stores that specialized in one thing or the other.

Now they take the item and hop on eBay and price it the same.”

“The interest is extending.

this is. I don’t feel like I can just wonder about things anymore, I have to look for them.

I never thought that endless streams of information would be the downfall of me, but here we are. “

“I used to have a pen pal.

Then we both got online and granny went.”

“Trivia nights at the bars.”

People who cheat on trivia nights in bars are not people.”

Romantic relationships.

People on social media post so much toxicity and make you think about every little thing, it’s crazy.”

“More tourism to beautiful, beautiful and clean places.

They don’t seek after someone’s post goes viral or the influencer goes there.”
