How does TANF work?

Each state uses TANF block grants to fund monthly cash assistance payments to low-income families with children. Although each state has different programs, they are all designed to help families in need by providing financial support.

Depending on the state you live in, the assistance offered may vary. Others provide emergency assistance for those who are on the verge of homelessness due to an emergency. Can I get TANF?

The TANF program determines your eligibility based on your income, which also depends on the state in which you live. For example, the monthly gross income limit in Mississippi for a family of three is $680. For California, your family income must not exceed $2,250.

Additional requirements include having at least one of the following in your family: A pregnant person, a dependent under the age of 18, or a college aide.

How long can I receive TANF assistance?

Again, it depends on your state, but in general, you can get TANF assistance for a full 60 months of your life. Each month you get help counts up to 60 months. So if you use TANF for five months a year, you’ll have 55 months left.

After you’ve used up all 60 months, states can decide to exceed the 60-month limit based on hardship.

How do I apply to start receiving TANF assistance?

It all depends on the country you live in. For example, some states offer an online portal through which you can apply, while others still require you to fill out an application and mail it in or visit an office near you.

To get started, visit the US Department of Health and Human Services Help for Families page. From here, you can select the state you live in and provide the information you need to get started.

You should see the government office address and phone number to reach you with any questions you may have. Each state has its own website that links to information about the programs it offers. For example, Kentucky has the Transition Assistance Program, known as K-TAP, and California has the Jobs and Responsibility for Kids program, or CALWORKS.

Some states, such as Kansas, offer a portal where you can check your eligibility online, apply for benefits and enroll online.
