Exactly on the 77th, the virtual “wish tree” was createdth United Nations General Assembly in New York and with the international campaign “Global Goals Week”.

Software company Digital Village has partnered with the UN Development Program’s SDG Action Campaign to develop and launch the ‘Wishing Tree’. Metaverse users can virtually gather around the tree and approach it to leave messages. You are encouraged to make commitments to drive progress towards one or more of the SDGs, or leave messages of hope, kindness and solidarity for other users.

Specifically, the theme of this year’s Global Coals Week is #FlipTheScript. Participants are encouraged to present positive case studies and to take action and challenge existing narratives and systems that have hindered sustainable development in the past. It is hoped that the “Wish Tree” will feed into this work.

Last year, 100 million messages and pledges were made using the Global Goals week topic hashtag #Act4SDGs.

Approximately 60,000 people have used Metaverse to date, and it is believed that young people are most interested. As augmented reality and virtual reality technologies rapidly gain popularity – again, mainly led by youth – usage is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. The SDG Action Campaign has stated its intention to spread its message to a wider audience, with social media users and gamers being two large communities that can be reached via new digital platforms.

Evelyn Mora, Managing Director of Digital Village summed up: “#FlipTheScript means we need to rewrite and re-examine the world around us. At Digital Village we are in the business of creating and curating new worlds and empowered to work with partners and change-makers like the UN SDG Action Campaign team to shape a new reality and future that works for all. The message of our wishing tree is to highlight how the power is in our hands to drive the change we all want to see.”

According to the OECD, at least 28% of people in each participating country are aware of the SDGs. However, awareness has not exceeded 45% of the population in any of its regions.

This is not the first time that emerging digital technologies have been used to promote the SDGs, particularly to young audiences. Back in 2017, game developer Niantic launched an SDG-focused campaign with the World Economic Forum via its mobile game Pokemon Go. The campaign featured locations dedicated to each of the 17 global goals, and players could add SDG-themed gear to their avatars.

In related news, the UN is hosting a new public engagement program, Global We, this week.

The program includes “conversation portals” – portable studios with digital connectivity and audiovisual equipment. Climate leaders and activists will use the portals to host talks and events between New York, Mexico City and Kigali this week.

Before COP27 begins in Egypt in November, another 25 conversational sites will be installed in urban areas around the world. The goal is to enable as many conversations as possible and, most importantly, to amplify the voices of those who are barely engaged, including the hardest-hit communities.

The Ikea Foundation, the retailer’s charitable arm, supports the initiative.
