Samsung Electronics Achieves Life Cycle Assessment Verification on Product Carbon Footprint for Semiconductors – Samsung Global Newsroom

The environmental impact of chips manufactured at Samsung’s global locations is shared to accelerate B2B customers’ carbon goals.

Samsung Electronics, a global leader in electric power technology, today announced that it has conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on the product carbon footprint of its electronics business and achieved verification from the DNV, one of the world’s leading certification bodies.

LCA is a method of assessing the environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of commercial products, processes or services, by measuring the amount of energy, materials and waste emissions. In detail, based on its semiconductors carbon footprint, Samsung’s LCA covers material extraction to chip manufacturing, assembly and testing. Its products comply with ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and ISO 14067 to ensure reliability and transparency.

The carbon footprint is widely used by Samsung and its customers to understand the environmental impact across all aspects of Samsung’s semiconductor products and can be used as a measure to track and reduce carbon emissions.

“Starting in 2019, we are stepping up efforts to measure and reduce the carbon emissions of our core memory and logistics solutions,” said Dooguen Song, Deputy Director of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Center at Samsung Electronics. “Using LCA, we will be able to support our customers in achieving their carbon-free lifestyles and better understand the environmental impact of the semiconductors we produce in the world.”

As of 2019, 37 of Samsung’s semiconductor products have received carbon footprint certification from the Carbon Trust and UL, 6 of its memory products have been certified for carbon reduction from the Carbon Trust. Samsung’s eco-friendly product portfolio includes DRAM, SSD, embedded storage, mobile SoC, mobile Image Sensor, automotive LED packages.

Using its LCA established late last year, Samsung will calculate the carbon footprint of chips manufactured across its manufacturing, testing and global assembly sites in Korea, China and the US

In terms of sustainability, Samsung expands its LCA to include water and resource footprints to provide a comprehensive assessment and ultimately reduce the environmental impact of various applications such as mobile phones and apparel, data centers, consumer electronics, automotive, communications and more. .
