New York City Schools Ban Artificial Intelligence Tool ChatGPT Amid Cheating Worries

The Department of Education of New York City, the nation’s most comprehensive school system, has banned the ChatGPT artificial intelligence device for other reasons, fearing it would increase student fraud.

AI-powered chatbots can create conversational answers to users’ questions and even write texts from online sources.

New York City decided in early January to ban the device “due to concerns about the negative impact on student learning and [the] School system spokeswoman Jenna Lyle said in a statement shared with CNET.

ChatGPT, which stands for “Pre-Chat Training Converter”, can answer questions on everything from complex math problems to computer coding. What makes ChatGPT different from search engines like Google, ChatGPT generates its original answer based on all the information contained in its database. Google can only give you a choice. It can be used at various grade levels, including college.

ChatGPT was launched by San Francisco-based OpenAI in November 2022.

While ChatGPT can be used for a variety of reasons, Lyle points out, “it does not develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for learning and lifelong success.”

In a statement sent to the Washington Post, OpenAI said it did not want the chatbot to be used for the wrong reasons in schools, and the company looks forward to working with educators on useful solutions to help students and Teachers “benefit from artificial intelligence.”

New York City is not the only city blocking ChatGPT.

The first school system to ban Chat GPT was the Los Angeles Unified School District. The ban was announced on December 12. A Los Angeles Unified School spokesman told the Washington Post that the ban was imposed to “protect academic integrity,” Forbes reported.

Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia banned ChatGPT on all devices released by the county in January.

According to a Seattle Public Schools district representative, the district banned ChatGPT from all school equipment, saying the district “does not allow fraud and requires original thinking and work from students,” KSL reported.

And public schools in Montgomery County, Alabama, have also blocked access to the ChatGPT website, and officials are considering “guidelines for teachers and staff as it relates to their classroom readiness.”
