LMU Loses In Three Sets To #16 BYU


LOS ANGELES — The Lions lost in three sets to ranked BYU in the opener of the WCC conference.

The LMU entered the board first in set one. Two BYU attacking errors would give the Lions a 5-4 lead. An ace over Isabella Barford would extend the lead for the Lions, 8-6. BYU went on a 3-0 run and edged LMU 9-10. The Lions would then go on to their own three-point streak; thanks to a kill by rose stand and a service ace out Ella Boehle make it 13-11.

LMU retained the lead in the middle of the sentence. A kill by Audrey Kemp, with help from Bareford, would start a streak of four unanswered points for the leading Lions at 20-16. The Cougars went on a three-point streak followed by a four-point streak to take the lead from the Lions 24-22. It was a close set, but BYU would win the first set 25-23.

Set two started with BYU running 3-0. A kill by Jaquelyn Moore would put the Lions on the board and be within two of the Cougars, 3-1. BYU led the LMU majority of the second set. The Lions were five points behind the Cougars thanks to an ace from Boehle. BYU would retain the lead and win the second set 25-18.

Set three was close between the two teams. Both the Lions and Cougars would not score more than one point against each other. Eventually, BYU would lead 6-5. The Cougars would then go on a 4-0 run and extend the lead to 16-11. A kill by Phoebe Awoleye followed by back-to-back kills from Moore and Isabelle Refell would tie the score 21-21. Unfortunately for the Lions, the Cougars went on a four-point streak and won the set by 25-21. BYU won the game 3-0.

The Lions’ next game is Saturday, September 24 at 12:00 pm against No. 4 San Diego.
