LOS ANGELES — LMU played Long Beach State on Saturday night and trailed behind The Beach in match five.
Long Beach State went on a 3-0 run early in the first set but missed a kill Phoebe Awoleye would bring the Lions within one by The Beach, 3-2. LMU would go on a streak of three unanswered points thanks to back-to-back kills Jaquelyn Moore, Ella Boehle and rose stand; but still behind The Beach at one, 12-11.
A midway shift came for LMU as the Lions took a 9-0 lead and went 21-12 ahead. The Lions would win the first set 25-16.
In the second set, it was The Beach who opened the game with a 3-0 run. Three kills off Audrey Kemp and rose standwith all three assists out Isabella Barfordwould give the Lions a one-point lead, 5-4.
LBSU made a lot of runs throughout the set and took the lead 19-12. LMU tried to fight back but failed to win the set, beating The Beach 25-21.
Set three started in the Lions’ favour, leading The Beach 6-2. Two misses by LBSU and a kill by Moore helped extend the lead by seven points for LMU, 11-4. The Lions went on an eight-point streak, beating The Beach 25-11.
The Lions started with a kill from set four Kari Geissberger. Both teams went back and forth, but The Beach would go on a three-point streak and lead the Lions 8-5. LBSU had multiple streaks throughout the set to eventually lead 22-13. The Lions put on a 2-0 run but still went down 25-16 at The Beach.
The fifth set started tight for LBSU and LMU, both teams separated 3:3. A kill by rose stand, followed by a Geissberger kill would put the Lions within one of The Beach, 5-4. LBSU would go on a steak with four unanswered points and increase the lead by four, 10-6.
The Lions and The Beach went one on one the rest of the set and it was LBSU who would go on to win the fifth set 15-11 and the game 3-2.
LMU plays the BYU Cougars again on September 22nd.
