SEOUL – LG Uplus, a mobile operator in South Korea, has built a backup network that enables stable operations in times of earthquakes and fires by building cloud-native software on the AWS cloud. By applying cloud-native technology, infrastructure resources can be freely modified and deployed according to various service-specific requirements.

Cloud-native is an approach to building and running cloud-native applications that take advantage of cloud computing deployment. For 5G, the cloud needs to be transformed to cloud-native so service providers can achieve game-changing business agility in rapidly onboarding new applications and deploying or operating new services.

LGU+ explores ways to build various network devices using AWS’s cloud. “By securing next-generation network cloud core technologies with AWS, we can cost-effectively deliver optimal quality without disrupting services, even in the event of traffic surges or outages,” Lee Sang-hun, head of network by LG Uplus (LGU+). development department, said in a Sept. 20 statement.

LGU+ used container-based cloud-native devices from Samsung Electronics, which can maintain optimal quality by expanding processing power and capacity as traffic increases, and can quickly and flexibly allocate resources needed to configure network devices in the AWS cloud are needed. The automation of operational tasks such as disaster recovery measures and application distribution during ongoing network operation is also advantageous.

Containers encapsulate code and dependencies in one package. Many mobile operators consider cloud-native network architecture combined with containers as a key component to make 5G networks agile and efficient. Containers would allow telcos to quickly install and deploy applications and modularize them by function and characteristics, allowing them to configure only specific functionality required by different applications.

Cloud-native based technology is used as the basic structure of 6G core networks. As a pioneer in the rollout of 5G cellular services, South Korea is aiming for the world’s first 6G cellular commercialization.
