Ahead of our upcoming Intel Innovation Event, I’d like to expand on why this is the right direction for the developer community, our customers and partners, and the entire ecosystem.
Open Accelerated Computing
We no longer live in a world of monolithic computer architectures. In order to compensate for the variety of architectures and hardware types, the software has grown in modules. Based on the task at hand, today’s developers routinely switch between interfaces, software stacks, and the best hardware to tackle it.
Decentralized and distributed services offer developers incredible opportunities to provide innovative and efficient solutions, but come with increased complexity.
To help developers increase productivity and improve time-to-value, we invest in tools like Intel oneAPI that take the modular approach to optimize and accelerate heterogeneous workloads on the latest hardware. oneAPI helps developers code more efficiently and get to market faster, providing a single programming model with a full set of cross-architecture libraries, tools, and frameworks using familiar languages and standards. Additional tools higher up the stack, like the Intel Distribution of OpenVINO Toolkit, support software development, reduce deployment time, and facilitate powerful deep learning from the edge to the cloud.
These Intel tools remove code barriers and enable interoperability with existing technology investments. They simplify portability for developers and create a model for developers to deploy applications at scale. When you build on Intel technology at the solution, service, and platform layers, these tools can extend the full platform potential to the application and workload layers. This is a key benefit that only Intel can offer to the developer community.
Openness drives innovation
While complexity is demanding, we face another challenge. Many software stacks have become proprietary, verticalized systems designed to engage developers. At Intel, we believe this way of working stifles opportunity and innovation for developers. Our commitment to the open ecosystem enables greater collaboration across open source and proprietary systems.
Intel believes that an open ecosystem with support for open source, open software, open standards, open policies, and open competition creates a horizontal playing field on which innovation thrives. A recent example of this work is our contributions to the co-authored paper describing an 8-bit floating point specification to provide a common format that works for both AI training and inference. Our goal is to make it easier for developers to choose the Intel software to run on Intel hardware, and we designed these technologies to deliver the highest levels of performance and quality on the market.
