The Industrial Internet of Things Consortium is updating the reference architecture for the Industrial Internet

November 15, 2022 – The Internet of Things Industry Association (IIC) has announced that it has updated its Industrial Internet Reference Architecture (IIRA). Version 1.10 of IIRA addresses the challenges of current IIoT systems and industry trends, such as IT-OT convergence, digital twins, systems composed of autonomous systems, and the inclusion of “non-human” digital users.

“As Industrial Internet of Things becomes known and pervasive across industries, how systems are designed and modernized remains relevant and evolves,” said Shi Wanlin, Chief Technology Officer, Yo-i Information Technology and one of the authors of the framework. “V1.10 of IIRA improves its usefulness with new development trends.”

“We updated the framework after feedback from IIC members who have used IIRA for several years,” said Daniel Young, senior director at Toshiba America and one of the authors of the framework. “The proposed improvements reflect their real-world experiences. V1.10 from IIRA helps practitioners developing IIoT systems across industries meet their system requirements.”

The founding opinions of IIRA (Business, Use, Function, and Implementation) remain unchanged. However, the IIC has revised and expanded the sections to address how organizations use the perspectives. For example, the new IIRA involves mapping core IIoT functionality to system requirements classes. This helps organizations understand which functions best meet their needs.

Another addition to IIRA V1.10 is a new set of architecture patterns that system designers can use to customize standard system features and applications. IIRA V1.10 also demonstrates how system designers can overlay patterns with each other (or with different architectural patterns) to help them build new system applications from a well-understood set of models.

The IIC Technology Working Group developed this founding document. Please download IIRA version 1.10 from the IIC website for more information and a complete list of authors.
