Hyundai Motor joins hands with online streaming platform to strengthen OTT service for connected cars

SEOUL – Responding to consumer demand for diverse in-car experience and entertainment content, South Korean automaker Hyundai has partnered with Wavve, a domestic online streaming platform, to launch its over-the-top (OTT) video service for connected Empowering cars offer vehicle occupants an optimized driving experience by linking a variety of data generated while driving.

Infotainment is a type of media, usually television or online, that provides a combination of information and entertainment. Connected cars can share internet access and data with other indoor and outdoor devices. Together with other technologies such as automated driving and shared mobility, connected vehicles are contributing to a new type of mobility in the future.

Under a MoU, Hyundai and Wavve will work together to build a platform for installing OTT services and discovering new content. “We hope this MOU will bring more diverse and rich content to customers using connected cars,” Choo Kyo-woong, head of Hyundai’s Electrical and Electronic Systems Development Center, said in a Sept. 19 statement.

Hyundai Motor Group supports the development of technologies to install OTT content on connected car infotainment platforms. Without the connection of external devices, Hyundai aims to operate platform services quickly through continuous wireless updates using software technology.

Wavve will produce OTT content, discover new content and services, and develop applications that can be conveniently used in infotainment systems. “We will work with Hyundai Motor Group to create an era where users can conveniently enjoy OTT anywhere, even in cars,” said Lee Tae-hyun, CEO of Wavve.

Hyundai has promised to realize higher customer satisfaction with various OTT content and strengthen the competitiveness of connected cars. In December 2021, Hyundai partnered with CJ ENM, a major entertainment group that created the Oscar-winning film Parasite, and TVING, an online streaming service, to create an ecosystem for delivering differentiated OTT content .

Connected car technologies using a computing platform from Nvidia, an American technology company, will be applied to all Hyundai models. An integrated infotainment system allows the driver to control audio, entertainment and air conditioning, as well as real-time navigation and safety functions.

Hyundai would use a connected vehicle information display system to implement information related to safety and comfort through vivid 3D graphic animations. Infotainment systems connect via mobile communications to receive road information or automatically contact emergency services when the car detects unusual activity, such as a car crash or parts malfunction.

Hyundai’s next-generation connected car operating system has four key functions: data analysis, seamless connection between vehicles and surrounding infrastructure, intelligent computing that identifies driver intentions and conditions, and in-vehicle and external network monitoring.
