Huawei calls all students and mobile app developers to this year’s Apps Up Contest – Manila Bulletin

Huawei’s global app innovation competition, Apps UP, is now open to any student, mobile app developer, hobbyist, professional with an existing app or with ideas to develop a new app. Apps UP is a Huawei global event that brings together developer talent from around the world to create an app ecosystem that intelligently connects everything. It aims to inspire developers to innovate, bring people, devices and scenarios together and create enhanced app experiences for users. Deadline for app submission is October 9, 2022.

HMS Core, based on Huawei devices and Android platform, is a mobile service framework that provides app developers with a variety of service functions. It provides Huawei end users with basic services such as HUAWEI ID, payments, and notifications. It provides tools and services for third party developers to create their own apps.

In June 2022, the total number of registered Huawei developers reached 5.75 million. As of June 2022, more than 216,000 applications have been integrated into HMS Core worldwide. HMS Core continues to develop innovative and open functions for multiple devices, operating systems and the entire scene, providing solutions for multiple industries.

Joining Apps UP has many benefits that participants appreciate. Apps UP can help developers speed up the adoption of their app and get it to market sooner as developers can get technical support and enhance features of their apps with HMS Core Kits. Also, publishing their own app on HUAWEI AppGallery provides developers with a platform to reach 730 million monthly active users of HUAWEI devices.

To participate, you only need to register with your HUAWEI ID. Developers can participate individually or as part of a team of no more than four members. Submitted work must contain at least one open HMS feature or service and run smoothly on devices on which HMS is installed. The judging process includes a review by industry-leading judges, followed by a public vote. In December 2022, the winners of 9 award categories will be announced.

Team Alpha, which consists of two members, Supuni D. Jayasinghe and Krishalika Dilani, is Apps UP 2021 winner of the “Best HMS Core Innovation Award”. Their app, Land of Calm, is a wellbeing app that helps users track their sleep and mental wellbeing, with features like anxiety log analysis and a calm audio playlist and stories.

“Apps UP was our first experience of entering a mobile app development competition and developing a mobile app. We encountered some technical challenges during the process, but these were quickly resolved when we received support from Apps UP’s technical team, who worked tirelessly to resolve our concerns. We were also able to reference HMS integration documents and get advice from the Huawei Developer Forum.

Team Alpha was able to offer better experiences to its users through features unlocked with HMS Core kits. “After examining the requirements for developing app functions, we decided to use the account kit for authorization, HUAWEI cloud storage for data storage, audio kit for playlists, ML kit for text-to-speech to read stories and integrate the in-app messaging function to remind and motivate users of the sleep routine challenge. These kits offer app users a unique experience,” shared Team Alpha.

“Although Land of Calm is our first mobile application, Apps UP has helped us improve our technical knowledge and gain valuable experience. Our app has also gained global exposure thanks to the competition, exposure we would not have had if we had launched our app on our own,” shared Team Alpha.
