Ambassador Lute is a distinguished leader in US defense policy, international security and government affairs. He is the former United States Ambassador to NATO and an influential player in shaping and implementing the Alliance’s responses to the world’s toughest security challenges Europe since the end of the Cold War. In addition, Ambassador Lute served on the US National Security Council as Deputy National Security Advisor for six years under Presidents Bush and Obama Iraq and Afghanistan.

Prior to his time in the White House, Lute served 35 years on active duty in the US Army, where he held various senior positions in European Command, Central Command and the Joint Staff. He retired as a Lieutenant General and is currently the Chair of International and Defense Practices at BGR Group.
Ambassador Lute holds degrees from the Kennedy School of Government Harvard University and the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a founding member of the United States Institute of Peace’s Senior Military Advisory Group; a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy; and board member of the Atlantic Council of The United States.
