Director of AI laboratory at MIT speaks to WiSTEM club – The Sagamore

Daniela Rus gave a speech to the WiSTEM Club regarding her travels and research in the world of science and robotics on Wednesday, October 26th.

Daniela Rus, Director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), gives a presentation to women at the STEM (WiSTEM) Club on Wednesday, October 26, during the X-block.

Rus said her interest in STEM was fueled by her past experiences when she was growing up in Romania under a policy that required everyone to work with machines in factories.

“For a while, I went to work one week every month in a factory that made locomotive parts,” Rus said. “I learned how to use multiple machines. I learned how to think about robots. ”

While becoming a professor at MIT, Rus created AMOUR, which stands for “Automated Optical Modular Underwater Robot.” According to Rus AMOUR was inspired by one of Rus’ childhood writers, Jules Vernes. The robot took three years to build but was destroyed in three months of testing.

After the devastation, Rus said she was determined to rebuild AMOR. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, the process of reconstruction is faster, Rus said.

“Great failures teach us great lessons. It took three years to build the AMOUR robot and three months to make three copies of the AMOUR robot, ”Rus said.

Rus also talked about her research regarding the relationship between regenerative cells and robots. They can be applied to robots to reconfigure themselves for all tasks, Rus said.

“[Through reprogrammable cells] Robots can look their best for a task, ”Rus said. “Suppose a robot needs a screwdriver off the shelf. If the screwdriver is too high to reach, the robot may shuffle its cells to extend the arm. More to get a screwdriver.

With so many rewritable cells already in use, Rus says she’s excited about the future of technology and how it will be created by different types of robots.

“Each of us can imagine a robot that saves lives, improves lives and completes tasks,” Rus said. “For me, the future with more robots brings us more possibilities and more possibilities of fun.”

“STEM is a field for everyone and it is a gateway to innovation and reward,” Rus said.

“STEM is a place. [everyone] Rus said. “You can be creative and give the part where the tools and coding are advanced, where you can really get power.”
