For many local university students, financial challenges turn into tough decisions when they have to buy expensive textbooks. A student from Molteno in the Stormberg Mountains saw this widespread problem as an opportunity – and it led her to the finals of the MTN SA Women in Digital Business Challenge 2022.

Designed to bring together sellers and buyers of used books, Nkcubeko Noyila’s Rebooked app offers an alternative to buying new academic books or prescribed textbooks at exorbitant retail prices.

“Many of us couldn’t buy the books we needed because they could cost well over R1,000 each, so we had to borrow and share books or spend countless hours in the library,” says Noyila. “That made studying and passing subjects more difficult.”

Where Rebooked used to only be active at certain times of the year due to its sole focus on college books, the app has now evolved for all book lovers – from book club members to those just looking for something good to read are.

The app won 100,000 Rand in the 2022 MTN SA Women in Digital Business Challenge.

Finding a job that puts food on the table is a huge challenge for thousands of Kenyans. For those living in the many informal settlements surrounding Nairobi, the odds of finding work are slowly shifting in their favor thanks to mobile technology and the homegrown Kazi app.

The app received the MTN Business App of the Year Award 2021 in the “Best Africa Solution” category.

Kazi founders Granville Wafula and Mwenesi Musalia wanted to develop an app that would allow job seekers and employers to meet, negotiate and set working conditions on an ad hoc basis.

“But in reality it’s not easy to find suitable people for jobs in Nairobi,” says Wafula. “Traditionally, we’ve done networking – we contact friends or relatives hoping they know someone to recommend.”

The founders felt there had to be another way to help the unemployed connect with job seekers.

“Smartphones, which almost everyone has, were the obvious answer. We thought that everyone, whether they were unskilled laborers or skilled, unemployed tradespeople, could benefit from an app that puts them in touch with potential employers.”

That’s when Kazi was born. People from more than 100 work categories have listed their services. Requests for help range from 500 to 1,000 contacts in a month. All applicants will be checked. Your identification documents and formal qualifications are recorded. Character and job references are required before joining the platform.

One of the main benefits of the app is that people can now search for work without having to incur travel expenses, as the app can also find job openings that are close to the specified address of a listed worker.

Huawei AppGallery hotline

Huawei AppGallery has enhanced its customer support with a hotline and live chat service in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and South Africa. The service provides users with a team of experts capable of answering questions about most Huawei AppGallery apps and solving any issues that arise.

Huawei was subject to a US trade ban in 2019 and has since been banned from connecting to Google and its Play Store, making many apps unavailable to users. It then launched the Huawei AppGallery, which is now available in over 170 countries and has more than 580 million users. However, some apps need to be downloaded directly from websites.

Updated AppGallery users no longer need to search online or watch videos to find solutions to their problems when they have access to instant support through live chat services. When an issue arises, they can contact Huawei directly for support in their preferred language, with no additional fees and step-by-step instructions.

The Huawei AppGallery support hotline and live chat services are available Monday to Sunday from 08:00 to 21:00 and can be reached at 086 086 1111.
