After Previously Leading Innovation At Estée Lauder, This Founder Has Introduced His Own App To Revolutionize The Skincare Industry

Revea sets a new standard in the skin care industry with the debut of its mobile experience.

As AfroTech told you, the San Francisco-based company wanted to create an accurate mobile experience that integrates hyperspectral imaging and artificial intelligence (AI). This technology will create more sophisticated diagnostics to develop skin care solutions for users. 3,000 skin profiles have already been created.

The idea for this came three years ago from Revea founder Chaz Giles. After his experience leading innovation at Estée Lauder, he recognized flaws in the skincare industry.

“Industry wasn’t built for where the world is today. So, over time, the world will look more like you and me, less like the historical definition of beauty, which is that type of Upper East Side white woman. Now that’s changing and that diversity is coming along,” Giles told AfroTech.

He continued, “What we saw was a failure in beauty to see the true diversity in the world, but then we saw that the problem was much bigger than age, race or ethnicity. The challenges people faced were very individual as our skin is driven by our biology. I can’t group all black women together and say, “Here are the skin issues you have.” That’s ridiculous to think about. And just like when a friend who could be another black woman recommends a product to you, it may or may not work for you because your needs may be different. Or even if your needs are the same, the way your skin breaks down and the way you process ingredients are also very different. So what we saw was a moment to use technology and a cutting-edge breed of AI and machine learning to solve the problem every consumer is chasing, which is to help me understand what’s going on with my skin .”

Revea has worked diligently to bring its technology to market. Additionally, its efforts were recently accelerated with a $6 million funding round to support the launch of its mobile experience, available to users today.

AfroTech exclusively tested the full product to see how the mobile app uses technology to recognize your skin needs and connect users to the right ingredients for their biology.

To start, users should opt for a clean face and stand in a well-lit area for best results.

Artificial intelligence is then used to scan data points while accessing three different quadrants of the face. The scan will take nearly 30 images and measure six layers of skin as this will be helpful in extracting information for deep biological data.

After this step, the application shifts to a range of questions about lifestyle, sleep patterns, skin conditions, and menstrual cycles, among others.

Upon completion, your skin health will be analyzed to create a hyper chart. This process requires patience as it can take up to three minutes. When available, the hypergraph will display your radiance and 40 skin attributes under six skin parameters.

The parameters include the melanin distribution, the microenvironment of your skin, the skin water content and the collagen-elastin matrix, among others.

In addition, all users can learn about their skin damage for free using Revea’s technology. This was important to Giles as he wants users to be well informed about their skin without creating barriers to accessing that knowledge.

“It was really important for us to take today’s extremely inaccessible science and make it accessible to the people. For example, you may not be able to jump straight into the products, but we offer this platform, data, reports about the skin and the things that happen to your skin for free. This is just a digital product that can inform, educate and help you understand what things are driving the redness, inflammation or dry skin to make decisions. It was about how we are simultaneously building a business and advancing the industry.”

Users then have the choice to activate their membership-based model with Revea so they can access their custom formulation. Users then receive an AM serum and a PM serum, both of which are made to measure, along with a moisturizer available for purchase. The order will then be shipped in about 48 hours.

The process will not stop here.

Revea will continue to track users’ skin profiles over a three month period as they recognize that skin is easily influenced. Collecting a baseline measurement is a start to understanding skin’s natural variations as they formulate more products for current and new users in the future.

“We use that data and then any measurements you would take over the next 90 days. We use this to understand how your skin is moving, how it’s improving and what other things it might be affecting to make your next formulation smarter. In addition, all these measurements and data also flow back into the improvement of the community, because then the next person comes along [who] similar properties to some of these profiles, we learn from your interaction and interaction with your skin to improve the next formulation,” said Giles.
