Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji said the company found that its 300 employees were working concurrently with one of its competitors, adding that action would be taken in such cases by shutting down their services. Premji claimed that he stands by his recent comments about undeclared work as a complete violation of integrity “in its deepest form”.

“The reality is there are people working for today Wipro and work directly for one of our competitors, and we’ve actually spotted 300 people doing just that in the last few months,” Premji said at the AIMA (All India Management Association) National Management Convention.

Asked about the actions taken against employees found to be working in parallel for the company as well as for competitors, Premji said on the sidelines of the event that their employment had been terminated for “violation of integrity”.

The very definition of undeclared work is secretly having another job. As part of the transparency, individuals can have open conversations about playing in a band or “working on a project over the weekend,” he explained.

“It’s an open conversation where the organization and the individual can make a collective decision on whether or not this works for them,” he said.

Separating such cases from those involving employees secretly working for competitors, the Wipro top boss clarified: “There is no place for someone who works for Wipro and competitor XYZ and they would feel the same way if they would discover the same situation. ”

“That’s what I meant … so I stand by what I said … I think it’s a breach of integrity for you to moonlight in this shape and form,” he said.

The issue of undeclared work (techies who take side jobs to do more than one job at a time) has become a big talking point after the Wipro chairman reported the problem. Premji recently took to Twitter to highlight the issue, saying: “There’s a lot of talk about people in the tech industry doing undeclared work. This is cheating – pure and simple.”

The problem of undeclared work by tech professionals has sparked a new debate that is polarizing opinions within the industry. Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani recently tweeted the need to keep changing with the times, adding, “I welcome the disruption to the way we work.”

However, many have taken strong stances against undeclared work. earlier this month, Infosys had shot down a letter to his employees claiming that dual employment or “undeclared work” was not allowed and warned that any breach of contract clauses would result in disciplinary action “which may even lead to termination of employment”.

“No two-timing – no moonlighting!” India’s second largest IT services company said in a strong and resolute message to employees last week.

Infosys’ internal notice, titled “No Double Life,” clarified that “dual employment is not permitted under the…employee handbook and code of conduct.”

It also cited the relevant clause in the offer letter to make the point.

“Any breach of these clauses will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment,” Infosys said in the email.
