This may not seem like a big deal to those who don’t know, but it could portend a yet-to-be-heralded power boost from the engine lurking beneath that lumpy hood. Currently, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon is offered with the brand’s 6.4-liter V8 engine, a mill that has produced 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque roughly since birth. Jacking up the horsepower would certainly put the “power” back in the “Power Wagon,” especially since the brutal 7.3-liter V8 available in Ford’s Super Duty line of trucks makes 430 ponies and 475 lb-ft of rotation. And we all know how truck manufacturers love to hit each other over the head with power numbers.

Speaking of Ford, the Blue Oval crew will be hauling the covers off a new Super Duty on September 27th, a date that fits neatly into the State Fair of Texas. Rest assured Ram will be keeping an eye on the calendar and perhaps explaining why our photographers found this undisguised 23 in a grocery store parking lot. After all, making noise when your competition is about to introduce an entirely new model is a game straight out of Marketing 101. It’s obvious – we write about it and you read the article.

As for other tricks up Ram’s sleeve for 2023, expect trailer reverse controls (adapted to the system in their 1500) and jumbo towing mirrors to sprout from the 2500 Heavy Duty pickups in the upcoming model year. On this test mule we see a set of blinded headlights and a forward-facing camera, as well as room for an uninstalled winch. Ram has already announced the upcoming availability of a 12-inch frameless digital instrument cluster and a new digital rearview mirror. While the Ram’s interior remains at the top of its class, some of its competitors have definitely surpassed it in terms of hauling technology and towing devices that are appreciated by many drivers of these machines.

Sure, Luddites usually grumble about how no one can secure a trailer unaided anymore, but the fact remains that a solid band of truck owners will turn to any help they can get — especially when they have a horse or a camper trailer , both of which could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you don’t want the stuff, you can just put it down and enjoy your expensive crash.

According to insiders, Ram expects to start building the 2023 Ram Heavy Duty in early November.
